that lesbian singer

so today in bible class we watched a really long video (why do we never watch short ones?) of larry king live (he's kinda a prick) about this christian artist who came out (of the closet). first of all when larry asked if she was still a christian she wouldnt actually say the word christian, she kept calling herself "a person of faith" (which kinda made me think of like Muslums and Hindus and all the eastern religions) and she kept calling the Bible "the sacred text" (which in turn also made me think of the Koran and furthered the muslum theory). and the basis of her arguement was that christianity and homosexuality werent really at odds, even though im pretty sure homosexuality is one of the things that God is explicitly clear about...

excerpt from essay on man: alexander pope

Know then thyself, presume not God to scan,

The proper study of mankind is man.

Plac’d on this isthmus of a middle state,

A being darkly wise, and rudely great:

With too much knowledge for the sceptic side,

With too much weakness for the Stoic’s pride,

He hangs between; in doubt to act, or rest;

In doubt to deem himself a God, or beast;

In doubt his mind or body to prefer;

Born but to die, and reas’ning but to err;

Alike in ignorance, his reason such,

Whether he thinks too little or too much:

Chaos of thought and passion, all confus’d;

Still by himself abus’d or disabus’d;

Created half to rise, and half to fall;

Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all;

Sole judge of truth, in endless error hurl’d:

The glory, jest, and riddle of the world!

remember that earthquake?

no one seems to. you know, that one that completely wrecked Japan? who then had that nuclear meltdown?
ohhhhh thats right...now that i mention it you do.
ridiculous.
you know, when i was like in 6th or 7th grade, and a hurricane destroyed Haiti, everyone was like, oh man! quick! everyone send them soap!!! (im sure they sent more stuff, but i specifically remember soap for some reason...) and then when katrina hit new orleans, there were people like crying in the streets (this could be a slight exaggeration), and our church is sending people on mission trips like weekly.
then, japan gets hit by an record-setting earthquake, which caused a tsunami, which created a whirlpool, and then they have a nuclear meltdown (the worst one since that one that fried russia) and nothing.
i mean, sure it was mentioned a few times the day it was happening, although i mainly remember people asking me about hawaii (because the tsunami was heading towards there) and whether my family was going to evacuate (but lets be real here people, where are they going to go??) but altogether i was surprised on the amount of apathy everyone seems to have towards this (and im the one always betting on the dark side of human nature)
and yeah, ill be real, i pretty much only care cause im half japanese and am directly affected by rising rice prices, but really.

the senator

so today a Pennsylvania senator came to our school; who shall remain anonymous, not because im trying to like protect his identity or anything but i legit forget his name,
anywho, so he mainly just talked for a reaaallly long time, then people started asking him questions (and by "people" im mean the same two people who are the only ones who ever participate in bible class) and one of them was like what do you think about the US being in Libya (which is a surprisingly hard word to phonetically spell, kinda like "of" and "phonetically" itself) and he said he didn't think we should be there unless it directly effects the US. and i was thinking he must not drive often, because hello! gas prices! but i think he probably meant more substantial effects. and he was like the US is not meant to be a policing country and ect.
that sounds super selfish though, like the US isn't suppose to help anyone else unless it gets something in return. i also noticed this when i was writing my research paper about the chinese genocide, when Japan went into Nanking and just killed everyone in really horrible ways, and the US refused to get involved while Japan was taking over China until a boat with like few americans got attacked, then they freaked out. i mean wow, like hundreds of thousands of innocent Chinese people were being slaughtered and the US is just like whatever, but one boat gets attacked (and i don't even think anyone was killed) and the US is all over it.

scientism

i'm not saying i believe this, i mean, tom cruise is creepy,and he's just a scientologist. scientism is like scientology on steroids.
im just taking my teacher's word on this, haven't actually looked it up...but apparently they believe that the only way to truth is through science. the exact statement is "science is the only way to discover truth." supposedly this is a self-refuting statement because you cant scientifically prove that statement is true without using philosophy or something. however i don't think its self refuting, looks pretty solid to me, and yeah i haven't really spent a lot of time thinking about, but tom cruise reallllly creeps me out...
yeah.

small children in hell

not cool. really not cool.
so today in bible class we were talking about god sanctioning the killing entire nations. clearly thats not cool, and the arguements against it were things like; no one is truly innocent, god gave life and he can take it away, and the women and children probably ran away first. but when you think about it, these arguments are pretty weak, what if the people in question were ambushed and there was no time for running away? what if it was a siege? and what about the Egyptian incident of God killing all the firstborns in the entire nation, there's no running away from a freakin angel of death!!!
and just saying that no one is innocent and that god can kill whoever he wants just makes god seem like a colossal jerk.
so then there was the argument of children dying before the age of accountability just going to heaven. but apparently that's wrong too because the verse was taken out of context.
so not only is god killing kids, they're going to hell too.
and yeah, we can say that god is outside of time, so he knows what they would have done anyway. and at the end, when we're all being judged no one will be able to doubt the justice. but this here and now, and it sucks. its like god isn't even giving them a chance to make those mistakes or whatever.
