the first one said "there are balls and there are strikes, i call them as they are. "
the second umpire said "there are balls and strikes, i call them as i see them."
the last umpire said "there are balls and strikes, they aren't anything until i call them."
the three umpires represent our current views on truth. the first one is the judeo-christain view: there are absolute truths, truth is independent and objective. the second represents a slightly relative view of truth. the third is the post modern view of truth. post modernists believe we make truth.
in class we got a little caught up on the rather ironic fact that "modern" means "just now," making "post modern" mean "after just now." while this is a pretty good symbol for the fact postmodernism is very sketchy and not at all clear, we should also not be completely ridiculous and realize there was a school of thought called "modernism" and i think its rather fitting the school of thought that came after it while still carrying some of its principles, was named "post" modernism. maybe thats just me though.
